Who are Pawz for Thought?
Pawz for Thought are a small but very active animal charity operating throughout the North East of England. We were formed as a positive response to the distressingly high number of animal welfare issues in the region. The charity has no paid staff and everything we achieve is through the hard work of volunteers who willingly give of their time and money to improve the lives of abandoned or ill-treated animals in the area.
Our policy of trying never to turn away an animal or owner in desperate need means we always have a very wide variety of animals requiring new homes. As well as kittens and puppies we inevitably have many middle aged and older animals that have hit on hard times. Not to forget the numerous rabbits, mice, guinea pigs, rats, birds and occasionally reptiles, which all often find themselves homeless.
We believe in tackling the animal welfare issues at the source and therefore the charity has a very firm neutering policy and we ask the new owners of puppies and kittens to commit to it as soon as the animals are old enough. Many of the unwanted cats join established feral populations. We have a continual programme of trapping and neutering these animals. The older animals are returned to the colony. Volunteers spend many hours handling the kittens so that they become loving family pets which can be re-homed in the normal way.
Our work is not only with domestic animals, we will also help wildlife but please remember that young birds are best reared by mother birds! We have a small team of volunteers who specialise in wildlife, caring for any creature needing help before returning it to the wild. The larger animals are given immediate first aid and stabilised, then are passed to other animal charities.
